Three of the most important Spanish and international wine guides have awarded Pago los Balancines’ Vaso de Luz wine the distinction of Spain’s Best Red Cabernet Sauvignon. For the first time ever, a wine from Extremadura has achieved the highest ranking among wines made with this prestigious grape variety.

This wine, a reserve red aged in barrique for 24 months, has achieved the highest score among single variety Cabernet Sauvignon in the Peñín Guide 2014. It was also awarded 97 points out of 100 and best wine in this category by the Semana Vitivinícola Wine Guide and by the Palacio Guide to the Best Wines of Spain, Argentina, Chile and Mexico 2014.

This is the second time that Pago los Balancines has obtained the highest recognition for a single varietal wine, as it received this same accolade for Salitre, considered Spain’s best Garnacha Tintorera wine.

Vaso de Luz is part of the winery’s Bootleg Wines collection. A collection that includes unique, very limited edition wines of high quality. These wines also pay tribute to figures from the cultural world; in this case, Vaso de Luz is a homage to the painter and poet Manuel Padorno.

Vaso de Luz is made only in exceptional years. The grape is carefully selected in the vineyard from where it is transported to the winery in small boxes at night. Once at the winery, it is deposited in cement tanks where one of the key processes for the winery’s wines takes place: manual pumping over. This method enables us to extract everything that the grape has accumulated over the year: its full fruit expression, its colour and its structure. Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed the wine is transferred to barriques, where malolactic fermentation takes place, and it remains in these barriques for 24 months. Vaso de Luz is the result of our selecting the selection, the best of the best.
